310 hp and four wheel drive
The base price of the Golf R is 42.480 euro (in Belgium) and It has a 4-cylinder TSI petrol engine with a capacity of 1.984 cc. This engine delivers a power of 310 hp and a maximum torque of 400 Nm. in comparison with the previous generation the power of the Golf R has increased by 10 hp. The Golf R is equipped with 4MOTION four-wheel drive and a DSG-7, which is an automatic gearbox with double clutch and 7 gears. That is a new and second version of the DSG-7 that was developed by VW. The first DSG7 of the type DQ200 can be found in the smaller engines with a maximum torque of up to 250 Nm. This second DSG-7 of the type DQ 381 was developed for the powerful engines with a max. torque from 340 Nm and more, as in the Golf R. The Golf R can also impress with impressive performance. For example it goes from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.6 seconds. The top speed is 250 km/h.
Performance exhaust system Akrapovic
The Golf R can be recognized at the rear by the characteristic exhaust with 4 exhaust pipes. The stock exhaust system already produces heavenly sporty sounds. Optionally, you can choose an R- “Performance” exhaust system of titanium. This was developed in collaboration with Akrapovic and, thanks to its titanium alloy, is not only resistant to high temperatures, it also emits an even sportier soundtrack. In addition to the sportier sound, there is also a weight saving of 7 kg compared to the standard exhaust. The extra price of the option is 4.060 euros, but in our opinion it is certainly worth considering.
Performance Pack- “R”
Another interesting option that you can choose on the Golf R is a Performance Pack (2.950 euros) from Volkswagen R. If you take this package, you will get a special rear spoiler developed for the Golf R. This ensures with 20 kg. downforce not only for extra torque, but also for better traction. In addition, the package also includes the R-Performance brake system with perforated brake discs with special front brake pads and a silver plate with the “R” logo on the brake caliper. Furthermore, with this package the speed limit is also lifted. The top speed of the Golf R is in this case 267 km/h. That way you can personalize the Golf R even more towards use on a circuit. If you want it even more sporty, than you can also opt for the optional alloy 19-inch “Pretoria” wheels that weigh only 9.6 kg. Optionally, you can also opt for semislicks.
Another option that is worth considering is the possibility to opt for a fully digital cockpit. Active Info Display is a fully digital instrument panel with various interactive functions. All instruments are digitally displayed on a 12.3-inch color screen. The info from the navigation system can also be displayed in 2D or 3D. As a driver, you can also choose from 5 different profiles for displaying the instrument panel.
Traffic Jam Assist makes driving in a traffic jam a lot easier. This works on the basis of Lane Assist and ACC for the models with a DSG. Lane Assist, among other things, ensures that the car remains within the lane. The Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) provides automatic braking and acceleration for speeds of up to 60 km/h. With the Traffic Jam Assist the Golf guides the driver in the traffic jam with steering, driving and braking. The driver must keep his hands on the steering wheel in order to intervene if necessary.
Emergency Assist allows the system to bring the car to a standstill autonomously when the driver can not do it himself. When the sensors detect that the driver is no longer steering, braking or accelerating, the system will warn the driver in different phases. If the driver does not respond then the system will activate the blinking lights and will automatically stop the car.
With Front Assist and Emergency Braking, the Golf can also detect pedestrians, among other things. If the system detects a pedestrian crossing the street, it can warn the driver and if necessary also brake automatically to prevent a collision.
We can only be lyrical about the Golf R in general. Are you looking for a sports car then the Golf R is the best choice. For an accessible budget you get a powerful 310-hp strong sports car that also has four-wheel drive. With the standard exhaust, the Golf R already sounds very sporty. Although the optional sports exhaust from Akrapovic is not cheap, it is worth considering. The soundtrack of the Golf R is even better and it really sounds great.
