With the arrival of the GLE Coupé, Mercedes combines the sportiness of a coupé with the robust appearance of an SUV in one brand new model. We were allowed to test this on the basis of a test drive with the GLE 450 AMG 4MATIC Coupé, the entry-level vehicle in the AMG range.
GLE 450 AMG 4MATIC Coupé
The Mercedes GLE 450 AMG 4MATIC Coupé has a 3.0-liter V6 BiTurbo petrol engine with a capacity of 367 hp and a torque of 520 Nm under the bonnet. On paper this does not look like crazy, but believe us, they are powerful horses and they are always ready to break out. On the other hand they also also let themselves be tamed easily. This AMG goes from 0-100 km/h in 5.7 seconds and the top speed is 250 km/h. The GLE Coupé has permanent 4MATIC all-wheel drive and 9G-TRONIC nine-speed automatic transmission.
Via DYNAMIC SELECT, a rotary knob on the center console, you can change the driving experience of the GLE Coupé significantly according to what you exactly want at that moment. Depending on what you choose, the settings of the chassis, suspension, steering and engine noise, among others, change. This is so ingenious that the GLE Coupé feels like a totally different car in SPORT + than in COMFORT. In COMFORT the car feels very comfortable and balanced, actually almost comparable to a sedan. An extremely luxurious sedan. The engine noise is more quiet and you can hardly feel any unevenness in the road. In SPORT + you get a different story. The gearbox shifts up and down at lightning speed. With every upshift you hear a loud metallic groan coming out of the exhaust. The car responds much faster to the accelerator and the steering feels much sharper and more direct. The car is also tighter and stiffer on the road, so you have to compromise on comfort on a bumpy road. With a turn of the button to COMFORT you can cruise again in peace and comfort. Great how flexible this car can be.
On the GLE 450 AMG you get the AIRMATIC package as standard. This includes an air suspension and the adaptive damping system ADS PLUS. The advantage of this system is that you can make every ride comfortable or rather tight and sporty.
The appearance of the GLE Coupé seems to divide the opinions somewhat. Too often a reference is made to the BMW x6. Personally we find the GLE Coupe a beautiful appearance. The car looks very cool and sporty. Viewed from behind, there is also a certain elegance in the lines. Large wheels also suit a car of this size. By default we find 21 “rims on the AMG model. Optionally you can also opt for 22 “wheels. Our test car was fitted with the 22″ 5-spoke wheels. Personally, we would certainly consider the 22” wheels.
In the interior we find GLE 450 sports seats and a multifunction sports steering wheel in nappa leather and 3-spoke design. The speakers of the optional sound system from Bang & Olufsen are also a delight to the eye.
After getting acquainted with the GLE Coupé, we are convinced that this can become a top selling model. All the practical advantages of an SUV combined with the fun of a sporty coupé. Thanks to DYNAMIC SELECT you can change the dynamics of the GLE Coupé in no time. Especially in SPORT +, the AMG 450 is a dream to drive. You get more than enough power, lots of driving pleasure and all of this with a great soundtrack from AMG in the background.
